Ep 33 - Dear Dr. Shiloh: Why Do I Feel Like I’m Falling Behind
Have you ever looked around and wondered how everyone else seems to be moving forward while you're somehow falling behind? Maybe your friends are buying houses, getting promoted, traveling, getting married, having kids, or building businesses. Meanwhile, you're looking at your own perfectly decent life thinking, “I thought I would be further along by now.”
But here's the question: according to who?
In this Dear Dr. Shiloh episode, we're talking about the difference between actually being stuck and simply feeling behind. Because sometimes that uncomfortable feeling is trying to tell you something. Maybe you've been avoiding a decision, waiting to feel confident, or saying you want something different while continuing to make choices that keep you exactly where you are. But sometimes you're not stuck at all. You're comparing your entire life to a tiny piece of someone else's. And sometimes what looks like a lack of progress is actually a season of rebuilding, recovering, grieving, stabilizing, or growing roots nobody else can see yet.
We'll talk about social comparison, invisible progress, the pressure of arbitrary life timelines, and a moment between Jesus and Peter in John 21 that might completely change the way you think about somebody else's timeline.
You'll also learn one simple question I use constantly in my therapy office when someone tells me where they think they “should” be: According to who? Because your life doesn't have to look impressive from the outside to be meaningful on the inside.
