Ep 34 - I’m Done Waiting for My Life to Look the Way I Thought It Would
There are a few things in my life I genuinely thought would look different by now. Maybe you can relate. You thought you'd be married by now. More financially secure. Further along in your career. Healthier. More settled. You thought the family situation would have worked itself out. You thought the prayer would have been answered. And when life doesn't follow the invisible timeline in your head, it's incredibly easy to assume something has gone wrong.
But what if your life isn't actually running late?
In this episode of Becoming Unbothered, Dr. Shiloh talks honestly about what it feels like to wait for something you deeply want, especially when you've already done everything you know to do. Because sometimes you did the work. You went to therapy. You changed the pattern. You made the hard decision. You prayed. You took the risk. You kept showing up. And the thing you wanted still didn't happen.
That's where waiting can start to feel personal. Dr. Shiloh explores why uncertainty is so uncomfortable for the brain, how easily we turn unanswered questions into conclusions about ourselves, and why faith doesn't require pretending disappointment doesn't hurt. Most importantly, she asks a different question: How much of your life are you willing to postpone until everything finally looks the way you think it should?
In this episode:
• Why most of us carry an invisible timeline for our lives
• What uncertainty does to the way we think
• Why doing the “right” things doesn't guarantee the outcome you expected
• How waiting can turn into emotional hypervigilance
• Why growth and grief can exist at the same time
• The danger of treating your current season like a waiting room
• How to keep wanting something without making your happiness contingent upon receiving it
• What faith can look like when you're disappointed with God
• Why Tuesday still counts, even when the big thing hasn't happened yet
You don't have to stop wanting what you're waiting for. You don't have to pretend you're not disappointed. You don't have to force yourself to call a painful season good. But you might need to stop staring at the clock long enough to notice the life that's already happening around you. Because maybe becoming unbothered isn't finally getting everything you've been waiting for. Maybe it's discovering that your life can still be good while some of the questions remain unanswered. Your life isn't running late. You're already in it.
